I feel very positive about our prospects for real change in 2008. As election season draws closer, I encourage all those concerned about the fate of the planet to vote for a candidate with a strong environmental track record and a stated commitment to renewable energy sources, alternative fuels and overall reduction of greenhouse gasses.
We are currently working on some practical methods for recycling the mercury contained in CFL bulbs in our home town of Birmingham, Alabama. Mercury, even in very small quantities, has many detrimental effects on the environment, especially rivers and streams. Recycling centers that accept fluorescent bulbs ballasts are starting to surface as energy efficient lighting use continues to grow. Several major retailers are exploring bulb recycling programs as a way to encourage the public to properly dispose of their spent light bulbs. Currently, Ikea stores will accept CFL and other fluorescent bulbs to ensure proper handling of the mercury contained within. Please visit this EPA Page to learn more about CFL bulbs, mercury and disposal.
